My Cassette Collection #9 - WASHED OUT “HIGH TIMES”
I remember about the age of 17, I used to visit Birmingham a lot with a few friends, wander about, be lil’ losers and giggle or something. One of the said friends, a girl who lived a few cities out and subsequently discarded me from her life when she discovered university (not bitter), showed us a store called COW, a second hand store, or “vintage” if yr that way inclined. I remember the experience of going in there for the first time, it was oddly mystifying whilst at the same time being quite alluring and otherworldly. I’d never really come across the concept of reusing old clothing from other people, least of all clothes with such loud + colourfully expressive patterns, styles and textures, but it soon became something I grew to like a lot. Couple that with the music playing over the stereos of this large, old, yellow and brick warehouse lot, I hadn’t experienced anything like it. The music they were playing was a lot of weird, trippy and pulsy ‘old sounding’ electronic music, the kind of music you’d expect to be in New York Ripper or some low-budget Blacksploitation film.
Years pass by, and that sound still resonated with me but i never really had a movement, source or mp3 to link it to, until I started delving into Pitchfork’s Forkcast around 2010. I discovered a heck of a lot of weird and wonderful artists, occasionally filtered under the umbrella of an emerging genre ‘chillwave’. One of which, which seemed to encapsulate the sound and remind me most of that old second hand store was Washed Out and the song “BELONG”. The lofi productions style, the bleachy harmonies, the reverbed drums and the weird synth all added towards this feeling that I had been searching for.
The pulsing and shake drums and the introduction to shaky tape ambience really addd a different flavour to my musical interests from then on, and I felt i had discovered something new and exciting that didn’t remind me of everything else, which was shit and normal.
Eventually I managed to get a copy of this and i was v glad i did as it’s one of my favourite EPs.
FAV TRAXXX: “BELONG”, “PHONE CALL”, “CLAP INTRO”

This will be the next thingy put out. 8-bit instrumentation, emo inflection, pop punk delivery. I stumbled across this EP on Bandcamp ages and ages ago and it’s cool to put it out because it was such a great find. It’s really anecdotal and honest, songs about being gay in a homophobic state, falling apart from friends, pressures of performing as a young person.

I am very happy to announce that we will be putting out a selected discography cassette of the great Videosforpictures work up until now. Let’s call it a best of, of sorts.

All covers are individual and are taken from the graphic novel ‘Wavelengt’ by Michael Baeres, an adapted storyboard of the film ‘Wavelength’ by Michael Snow (1967). Each cassette has a hand written track list on slip cards inside them.

If you’re fatefully unaware of who V4P is yet, quite frankly, you’re missing out. It’s primarily a solo project of the young Jay Lancaster, a New England youth, currently residing in Poughkeepsie, New York. He has been home recording his stuff since i’ve known him, his first EP ‘Very Three’ barely audible sometimes, having been recorded on a rubbish old video recorder. His work is a poignet collection of melancholic, foreboding, confessional and technically diverse and beautiful piano led songs. Somewhat in the vein of Thom Yorke when hitting the piano keys, but still distinguished and unlike a lot of modern music anybody hypes about. Almost baroque in a lot of ways, with folk influence, noise influence, rock influence and general balladry (in the best sense of the word).

He has been making music since about 2007, and has been one of the only artists I have ever known to be so consistently great with everything he has put out…and yet he is still completely unknown, only having just over 71 likes on Facebook. It’s a crime.

This release is a bid to get this brilliant musician some attention, attention he dearly deserves and has been long over due for many years, despite his talent, dedication and individuality.

The release will contain music from all of the releases he has put on in the past:

Very Three: The Underground Sessions (2008)
Endo Fanera (a collection of songs written between 2007-2009)
Anomie Family Brain (2011)
It’s Fine, It Happens (2011)
10 Minutes With…Videosforpictures (2011)
Joy Farm (2012)

He did release another EP quite recently called Good Dream Revised (2013), but I wont be putting any songs off there onto the discography.

I hope you guys will like what you hear, because I fucking love this guy and I am privileged to know the dude. Please download his EPs, give him some Facebook likes, share this page with your follows and post about it on Facebook. Make it your life’s work to get Videosforpictures more damn attention.

FFO: Perfume Genius, Coma Cinema, Teen Suicide, Thom Yorke/Radiohead
